Ford Mustang Boss 302
The Ford Mustang Boss 302 is an easy motor to praise. Its V8 engine and suspension are indeed boss! But even so, it's tough to say this car is one of the all-time greats. Plainly speaking, the Boss 302 is pretty crude when lined up with its European competition.
Nissan GT-R (R35)
Is the Nissan GT-R (R35) nice to look at? You won't get any arguments from us! But could it be better? Most definitely. The modern iterations of this stunning sports car struggle to measure up against other super-vehicles. The interior quality and overall refinement are so far behind.
Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34)
Can a vehicle be iconic and overrated at the same time? It's quite a dichotomy! In the case of the Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34), though, it fits the bill. For the price it demands today, you'd hope for better handling at least. On top of that, the outdated interior is hard to look past, too.
Alfa Romeo 4C
The Alfa Romeo 4C gets a lot right. Its mid-engine layout is superb and the carbon-fiber chassis demands your attention. Driving it, though? Oof! To call it challenging feels like an understatement. The car's suspension system is really rough, while the steering is uncomfortably jittery. What a bummer.
Tesla Model S Plaid
The Tesla Model S Plaid has some jaw-dropping specs. Not only can it produce over 1,000 horsepower, but it's also capable of hitting 60 mph in under two seconds. Wild, right! Mind you, it does have issues. Neither the brakes nor the handling feel that refined, while overall engagement is lacking, too. Overrated? You bet.
Bugatti Veyron
There's no other way of saying it — the Bugatti Veyron is absolutely gorgeous. And its output? It can produce a whopping 1,000 horsepower and reach 250 mph. Holy smokes! Despite that, though, this sports car doesn't offer a great driving experience. To put it bluntly, it's cold. Who wants that?
Toyota Supra Mk4 (A80)
A pop culture icon thanks to its use in the Fast & Furious franchise, the Toyota Supra Mk4 (A80) is highly sought-after today. Should it be, though? This motor doesn't have the greatest handling, while its gearbox leaves much to be desired as well. It might sound like sacrilege to some, but it's a pretty overrated sports car. And there's more to come, folks...
Dodge Challenger Hellcat
Hands up if you love the Dodge Challenger Hellcat's look. We don't blame you — it's pretty amazing! But beyond that? Oh boy. The brakes are iffy, the handling isn't good, and the sheer weight of the car hurts its overall performance. You won't find much precision here, folks.
Porsche 911 (991)
Sports cars can be a little too refined for their own good at times. That's certainly the case with the Porsche 911 (991). It's super impressive in a lot of ways, but the additional comfort takes away from the 911's previous rawness. For some enthusiasts, that's a tough pill to swallow.
Porsche Cayman GT4 (981)
The Porsche Cayman GT4 (981) is often hyped up thanks to its engine and incredible chassis. But is it really worth paying over $90,000 to own one today? That's debatable. You could find other Porsche models with similar features on the used market for a lot cheaper, folks.
Lamborghini Countach
The Lamborghini Countach may be the most beautiful sports car ever created. It's got to be in the conversation, at least! But is it a perfect motor? Not by a long shot. The clutch is taxing, the gearbox is insanely stiff, and driver visibility is awful. You'll have more fun looking at it than driving it.
BMW M3 (E30)
We might get pelters for this, but we're going to say it — by modern standards, the BMW M3 (E30) is quite overrated. Now, hear us out folks! Although it's an undoubted classic, this sports car isn't the quickest nowadays and it struggles to perform in less than ideal conditions. Does anyone else agree?
Nissan 350Z
The Nissan 350Z is both Beauty and the Beast. It looks incredible while offering some brutally-good performances. But is it overrated? We'd say so. Unlike other sports cars, this vehicle doesn't make for a very comfortable ride. The steering's incredibly heavy as well. Can you overlook those issues?
2023 Lexus LC
The 2023 Lexus LC is gorgeous through and through. The body? The interior? Wow. But one vital aspect stops it from being great — the engine. Yep, its 5.0-liter V8 is severly lacking on the performance-front. Can you imagine paying over $95,000 to find that out? Ouch!
2024 BMW M8
If you stare at the 2024 BMW M8 for long enough, you might start sending it love letters and flowers. It's an absurdly beautiful motor. Yet something lets it down. While the car's really sharp and fast, it's not the most comfortable to ride in thanks to a stiff suspension. What a heartbreaker!
2023 Bentley Continental GT
If you're paying $210,000 for a sports car, you'd hope that it's pretty much perfect. And the 2023 Bentley Continental GT does plenty right. It looks fantastic, has a stacked interior, and boasts a brilliant suspension. But the motor's weight is a problem. It can affect performances and be felt in the handling. That's quite a black mark.
Jaguar F-Type
The Jaguar F-Type is a proper head-turner. With a body like that, who wouldn't want to own one! Yet you might be disappointed once you're handed the keys. Regardless of this car's qualities, it's still no match for the E-Type — of which it's a spiritual successor. No amount of hype can change that.
Mercedes-Benz SLC
Is the Mercedes-Benz SLC an overrated sports car? We believe so. How come? Well, this thing feels very dated on the inside and doesn't offer a lot of space. In addition to that, the ride isn't all that smooth. The handling leaves plenty to be desired, too!
Ferrari 488 GTB
The Ferrari 488 GTB received a ton of hype upon its release. But did it live up to it? Probably not. This car is way too similar to the model it replaced — the 458 Italia. Their structures are nigh-on identical, as are their performances. Even though the 488 GTB is significantly quicker, that's the least you'd expect, right?
Lotus Evora
Lotus fans had a right to feel excited when the Evora rolled out. An eye-catching sports car with additional features? The brand usually went down the "bare-bones" route! But in focusing on the added comfort, Lotus seemed to neglect the vehicle's handling and performance. It lacks precision on the road. And the overall build quality? Yikes.
Fiat 124 Spider
The Fiat 124 Spider has a lot in common with the Mazda Miata. But for our money, it's clearly the inferior motor. The Miata is sharper, offers more features, and has a sportier setup. Why would you go for the 124 Spider if given the choice?
Ferrari Testarossa
Thanks to Miami Vice, the Ferrari Testarossa has been a pop culture icon for decades now. But we feel that's clouded the judgement of some. While this motor is certainly powerful, it lacks the speed of other performance cars. Its handling is a bone of contention as well. Sorry Crockett and Tubbs!
Mazda RX-7
Oh boy. The Mazda RX-7. This beauty is overrated for a couple of massive reasons. We'll start with the engine options — they're a nightmare! Both the turbocharged and naturally aspirated rotary Wankels have huge reliability issues. Then there's the maintenance. Looking after the RX-7 is more trouble than it's worth, folks.
Chrysler Conquest
Are you a fan of the Chrysler Conquest? No? Well, we can hardly blame you. While the car has something of a cult following today, it's tough to look past its shortcomings. The 2.6-liter turbocharged engine is a big one. It can only produce a meek 145 horsepower. Is our next entry just as disappointing?
Toyota MR2
Here's a hot take for you — the Toyota MR2 is arguably one of the most overrated sports cars to come out of the '80s. It only offers okay performances when compared to its competition, the interior is ridiculously cramped, and the roof is prone to leaks. Oh, and good luck maintaining it. Are we alone in this? Let us know!
DeLorean DMC-12
We can understand why the DeLorean DMC-12 continues to be hyped up. After all, the Back To The Future trilogy made it a legend. But let's not beat around the bush here — this is a bad sports car. And we mean bad. Alongside all its other problems, it takes 11 seconds to reach 60 mph. Yeesh. You'll be waiting a while before it hits 88 mph!
Vector W8
When looking at the numbers in isolation, the Vector W8 is very impressive. A top speed of 212 mph? 60 mph in 4.7 seconds? Awesome! Here lies the problem, though — that's not what was promised. Prior to its release, the W8 was hyped up to reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and achieve 242 mph. Darn it.
Camaro IROC-Z
Eye-catching? Yes. A big disappointment? Unfortunately! Yep, the Camaro IROC-Z leaves a lot to be desired. Its 5.0-liter V8 engine lacks genuine speed and power, while the handling is a major headache as well. This is definitely a case of style over substance.
Maserati Biturbo
As the first production motor to be equipped with a twin-turbo engine, the Maserati Biturbo is often remembered quite fondly. Should it be, though? Really? This car quickly rusts and frequently faces significant mechanical problems. It's a gas-guzzler, too.
Pontiac Turbo Trans-Am
Is the Pontiac Turbo Trans-Am a bad sports car? Certainly not. It's quick, powerful, and has decent handling. But its lack of finesse really holds it back. It doesn't entice you to jump behind the wheel for more.
Dodge Omni Shelby GLHS
The Dodge Omni Shelby GLHS doesn't lack speed or power. In fact, it could be argued that it's a little too "hot" for its own good. Keeping this car under control when it's in full-flight is the stuff of nightmares.
Ferrari F8 Tributo
We're getting a sense of deja-vu here. Despite the hype, the Ferrari F8 Tributo isn't much different than the 488 GTB — which in turn isn't a big improvement on the 458. Considering the F8 Tributo costs up to $470,000, that's a problem!
Lamborghini Diablo
The Lamborghini Diablo is a stunning sports car. Is it overrated, though? You bet. It's unreliable, hard to drive, and offers terrible visibility. Oh, and best of luck maintaining it. This thing will give you sleepless nights!
2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo
The 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo is sure to win a lot of people over. But is it as good as its $237,996 price-tag suggests? We're not so sure. It can't compete with the likes of the Lamborghini Huracan, which is in that same region.
Datsun 280ZX
It can't be denied that the Datsun 280ZX has a loyal following today. Yet even so, this '80s sports car really isn't much to shout about. An engine that can only produce 140 horsepower? Weak performances? A dull ride? Oof. It's not great, folks.
