These Cars May Be All the Rage Right Now, but Their Value Is Dropping
Unfortunately, most vehicles (aside from a few classic cars, of course) will depreciate in value over time. The model, condition, and mileage will obviously have an effect on how much your car is worth. However, in the long run, we can roughly estimate just how much a car will depreciate based on its brand. Let’s take a closer look at 20 modern cars that have the worst resale value.
Dodge
It’s safe to say that Dodge’s value retention is average at best. These cars tend to maintain decent value until the 5-year mark. However, from then on, the depreciation rate becomes a bit more dramatic. After 5 years, most Dodges are worth 35% less than they were when originally purchased.
Chrysler
Unfortunately, Chryslers aren’t the easiest to sell. When compared to other brands, they don’t have the worst 3-, 5-, and 7-year depreciation rates - but they certainly don’t have the best.
Jeep
Even though Jeep has become an iconic off-roading brand, most models depreciate pretty dramatically over just a few years. In fact, after just 5 years, your Jeep will be worth almost half of its original value (46.5%).
Buick
The depreciation rate of this brand is exactly why most Buick owners can say ‘the car has been in my family for years’. They simply don’t sell for anywhere near what they are purchased for, accounting for a massive financial loss.
Volkswagen
You may be a bit surprised to see VW on our list. However, even though the brand is undeniably one of the most popular out there, it has a pretty dismal depreciation rate. After 5 years, your VW will lose 50% of its initial value.
Nissan
Nissan is yet another brand that is often praised for its reliability and top-quality vehicles. With that being said, its cars are still prone to dramatic depreciation. At the 5-year ownership mark, your Nissan will have lost just over 50% of its original value.
Chevrolet
Chevrolet has made some pretty incredible cars in their time. Unfortunately, not all of these cars maintain their value quite as well as the original Camaro does. To be more specific, after just 5 years of ownership, you can expect to sell your Chevy for 51% less than you originally purchased it for.
Ford
Ford is one of the oldest car manufacturers in the world. However, that doesn’t make it immune to depreciation. At the 5-year mark, your Ford will be worth 51.3% less than it originally sold for, accounting for a pretty major loss.
MINI
Who doesn’t love a MINI? While you may be able to sell your secondhand MINI pretty easily, you definitely won’t make your money back. After 5 years of ownership, these cars depreciate by 53% in value!
Kia
Kia is yet another brand that has become known for their reliable and practical vehicles. However, with a 5-year depreciation rate of 54%, it’s safe to say that you will be losing a hefty sum of money if you decide to sell.
Hyundai
Hyundai has a surprisingly high depreciation rate, with the average vehicle losing roughly 54.6% of its value over just 5 years.
Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi vehicles have a high depreciation rate, with the average car losing about 40% of its value in the first 3 years. After 5 years, your car will be worth 55.4% less than what you originally paid for it.
GMC
GMC vehicles depreciate at a fast rate, with some of the most popular models losing almost 57% of their value in the first 5 years after purchase. GMC trucks and SUVs lose value especially quickly.
FIAT
Even though FIATs are incredibly popular cars, they also lose value quickly. After just 5 years, you can expect to sell your FIAT for almost 60% less than what you bought it for. The FIAT 500L and 500X are especially notorious for their high depreciation rates.
Subaru
Subaru vehicles have a pretty shocking depreciation rate, with some of the most popular models losing upwards of 60% of their initial sales value.
Mazda
While some Mazda models retain better value than others, the brand generally experiences quite a high depreciation rate. Many Mazdas lose upwards of 61% of their initial value in the first 5 years of ownership.
Honda
Honda is yet another popular automotive brand that experiences a rather drastic value depreciation within the first few years of purchase. After 5 years, your Honda will sell for a whopping 61% less than it was originally sold for.
RAM
RAM vehicles depreciate at a rapid rate, with even the most popular models selling for 62% less than their original sales price after just 5 years of ownership. To be more specific, the RAM 1500 Classic has one of the worst depreciation rates in its lineup.
Toyota
Certain Toyota models have some of the worst depreciation rates out there. To be more specific, 5-year value losses of up to 64% have been recorded on some occasions. Models such as the Camry, C-HR, and Avalon are especially prone to high depreciation.
Renault
Renault has one of the highest depreciation rates out there, especially within the first few years of purchase. In the first year alone, you can expect your vehicle to lose between 20% and 30% of its initial value. After 5 years, models such as the Renault Zoe have been recorded to lose upwards of 70% of their initial value, which is by far the highest on our list.
