No Gas-Powered Cars Will Be Allowed in These States Soon
It doesn’t take a genius to look at all those fumes that cars produce and realize the significant impact they have on the environment. And with electric vehicles becoming more and more popular, there has never been a more perfect time for states to start taking a firm stance against traditionally gas-powered cars.
Delaware
We know what you’re thinking: why Delaware? Surprisingly, it’s one of several states that is gearing up to ban gas-powered cars soon in an effort to reduce air pollution and ensure a more eco-friendly future. Delaware is aligning with California’s stricter vehicle emissions standards, aiming to phase out new gas-powered car sales by 2035. That’s nice and all, but seriously, who lives in Delaware?
Maine
Maine is the place that features in all those Stephen King novels. The citizens of Maine have pushed for the state government to implement a gas ban by way of a petition. If the state does adopt these standards, gas-powered vehicles could be fully banned as early as 2028. Now, if only they could ban interdimensional clowns, bloodthirsty Saint Bernards, and, uh, vampires.
Maryland
Maryland’s governor, one Wes Moore, declared in March of 2023 that the state would ban all gas-powered vehicles by 2035. Not only would this move help reduce carbon emissions, it could also save the county some $40 million a year, according to Mr Moore, at least.
Massachusetts
Home of three of the five colleges, Massachusetts was quick to join the ranks of the “going green” initiative. The state’s pro-active approach means that all gas-powered vehicles could be fully banned by 2035, if not sooner.
Rhode Island
Don’t mistake their small size for a lack of heart and conscientiousness - Rhode Island was the eighth state to join California’s Clean Air Act. As per state Governor Dan McKee, the implementation of this act will reduce smog and advance environmental justice.
New Jersey
Though they’re located right next door to one of the grossest places on earth, New Jersey sets itself apart with its actually liveable conditions, which are only set to improve if it can follow through with Section 177 of the Clean Air Act.
New York
Yes, despite being hell on earth, New York is one of the few states to join the likes of California in helping to reduce carbon emissions. Governor Kathy Hochul is responsible for launching the initiative, decreeing that all vehicles must be gas-free by 2035.
Oregon
Oregon was another early adopter of the Clean Air Act, becoming the fifth state to do so. You can thank the state’s Environmental Quality Commission for that, who hope to phase out all gas-powered cars by - you guessed it - 2035, highlighting the state’s dedication to a more sustainable future.
Pennsylvania
Indeed, the Keystone State is set to join the ranks of California, Oregon, and New York in banning all gas-powered vehicles - exactly how, though, is yet unknown. Still, it was nice of them to show their support for The Cause.
Vermont
Vermont was among the very first states to really make significant strides towards a cleaner future, beginning as early as 2022. The state mandate decrees that all new cars sold there must be gas-free by 2028.
California
Finally, we come to the state that started this all, the epicenter of the film industry, the ever-liberal and ever-progressive, one and only California. Yes, folks, all this “Section 177 of the Clean Air Act” talk began with them. Now, if only they’d take a harder stance on, you know, all the shady things that happen there. But we digress.
